In a heartwarming turn of events, a homeowner in Sunnyvale found himself in need of a licensed roofing company (check a license here). The narrative took a concerning twist when the 91-year-old homeowner was approached by an unlicensed roofing contractor. This resulted in an attempt to extract an illegal $5,000 deposit and an additional $5,000 for materials. Both are against California law. Thankfully, the homeowner’s vigilant son intervened upon noticing unusual withdrawals from his father’s bank account. Arriving in California, he halted a potential $10,000 withdrawal instructed by the dubious contractor, averting further financial loss. Beware of Unlicensed Contractor

The first challenge was the unlicensed contractor had taken many shortcuts. Firstly, they did not pull a building permit, secondly, they did not tear off the existing roof, and lastly, they were roofing over the existing roofing material. The final blow was they delivered two different color roofing materials to the job.
