Navigating the Bidding Process: Tips for Choosing the Right Roofing and Solar Contractor

For many homeowners, the bidding process for major home improvement projects like roofing, solar installation, or battery backup systems can feel overwhelming. Often, people are advised to get three bids and simply choose the one in the middle. While this may occasionally work, more often than not, it leads to suboptimal decisions.

The biggest issue lies in the fact that the contractors bidding on the job may not be quoting on the same product, installation type, or even quality of materials. For example, when considering a roofing project, one roofer might bid on composition shingles, another on lightweight tile, and yet another on wood shake. Similarly, for solar installation or battery backup systems, there may be significant variations in the products and configurations being proposed.

Too often, homeowners don’t have the time to research the products or vet the roofing contractors and solar installers bidding on the job. As a result, they may focus solely on the bottom-line price without understanding the full scope of the project or the long-term implications.

Understanding the Scope of Roofing and Solar Bids

I once quoted a roofing project where the property owner had three vastly different bids: one for composition roofing, one for wood shake, and one for lightweight tile. They were inclined to choose the composition roofing because it was the lowest cost. Before proceeding, I offered to step into a consultation role and help them understand the bids.

Once we broke down the proposals, it became clear they were comparing apples to oranges to bananas. I explained that before selecting a contractor, they needed to decide which type of roofing—composition, wood shake, or tile—best fit their needs. By focusing on one product type, they could then compare bids on an even playing field.

The same principles apply to solar installation projects. Whether you’re choosing between different panel brands or exploring battery backup options like Tesla Powerwall, understanding the differences is key to making an informed decision.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Contractor

Beyond products, it’s essential to consider the type of contractor you’re hiring:

  • The Independent Roofer or Solar Installer: Often referred to as “Chuck in the truck,” these small operators may offer competitive pricing but might lack resources or a strong track record.
  • Mid-Sized Companies: These often strike a balance between cost and reliability, offering more structured processes and warranties.
  • Large or Big-Box Companies: While these may have extensive resources, they can sometimes lack the personalized touch or flexibility of smaller firms.

When evaluating contractors for roofing, solar removal and replacement, or battery backup installation, take the time to understand their strengths, certifications, and warranties.

Avoiding Miscommunication

One of the most common complaints about roofing contractors or solar installers is a lack of clarity around the scope of work. Miscommunication can lead to delays, cost overruns, or disappointment with the final results. Clear and detailed proposals, combined with open communication, can prevent these issues from occurring.

Final Thoughts

Investing in a new roof, solar installation, or battery backup system is a significant decision. To ensure you get the best value for your money, take the time to understand the products being proposed, evaluate the contractors, and align on the scope of work before signing any contracts.

With the right approach, you can confidently choose a roofing contractor or solar installer who delivers a project that meets your expectations and adds lasting value to your home.
