Go Green Home Financing for Bay Area Solar and Battery Projects
Go Green Home is a clean energy loan program backed by the State of California. It helps homeowners pay for solar, battery storage, EV chargers, heat pumps, and other home energy upgrades. The program is run by the California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority (CAEATFA), part of the State Treasurer's office.
The state does not lend the money. Instead, the state backs the loans with a credit enhancement fund. That helps participating credit unions offer lower rates, longer terms, larger loan amounts, and more flexible approvals than they could on their own.

What Go Green Home Will Pay For
You can use the loan for a wide list of home energy projects, including:
- Bundled solar panels with battery storage
- EV chargers
- Heat pump HVAC systems
- Heat pump water heaters
- Energy-efficient windows and doors
- Insulation and air sealing
- Cool roofs
- Energy Star appliances
Up to 30% of the loan can be used for non-energy home improvements at the same time, such as small remodels or landscaping. That makes Go Green a good fit when solar is part of a larger home project.
Loan Amounts, Terms, and Rates
For bundled solar plus battery storage projects, loan amounts run from $5,000 to $75,000. Terms run up to 20 years. Rates depend on the participating lender, your credit, and the loan term. Current published rates from one of the main Go Green credit unions show ranges from about 3.58% APR on shorter terms up to around 7.98% APR on 20-year terms.
The state caps the maximum rate. Go Green Home loan rates cannot exceed the 10-year Treasury bond rate plus 7.5%. That keeps the program from drifting into high-cost territory.
Lower Rates for Some Households
Households in low-income or disadvantaged communities can get interest rate buydowns. In some cases, qualified borrowers receive 0% or 2% rates. These deeper discounts are tied to specific upgrades like heat pumps, so eligibility depends on the project as well as the household.
What You Need to Know Before Applying
- The loan is unsecured. There is no lien on your home.
- A UCC-1 filing is required for solar projects. The UCC-1 is filed against the solar equipment, not your house. It does not affect your title.
- Most lenders cap total home debt at 90% of home value when combining this loan with your mortgage.
- Loans are processed through participating credit unions, not directly through the state. You apply through a lender on the Go Green list.
- The work must be done by a Go Green registered contractor. Home Pro coordinates the full project and connects you to a participating lender for approval.
Why Bay Area Homeowners Use Go Green Home
The federal residential solar tax credit ended December 31, 2025 for cash and loan purchases. That changed the math for many homeowners. Go Green Home is one of the few state-supported programs that still helps lower the cost of solar after the tax credit expired, because it focuses on lower interest rates and broader approvals rather than tax breaks.
For Bay Area homeowners, the program works well for projects that combine roofing, solar, battery storage, and EV charging. We can roll all four into one project, one permit, and one warranty while you finance the energy upgrades through Go Green.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Go Green Home a state-funded grant? No. It is a loan program backed by the State of California. You still pay back the loan with interest. The state's role is to make the loans more affordable through a credit enhancement fund that lowers the lender's risk.
Who can apply for Go Green Home financing? California homeowners and renters can apply. You must live in California and have a project that uses Go Green approved equipment. Lower-income households and those in disadvantaged communities can get extra rate discounts.
Will Go Green Home put a lien on my house? No. The loan is unsecured. A UCC-1 is filed against the solar equipment for solar projects, but no lien is placed on your home.
What credit score do I need? Each participating lender sets its own rules. Many lenders accept lower scores than typical home improvement loans because the state's credit enhancement reduces lender risk. Talk to the lender to see what they will approve.
How long does the application take? Most lenders give same-day or next-day decisions once your application and project documents are in. Funding usually happens after the project is complete or in stages during installation.
Can I use Go Green for just a roof replacement? No. The loan must include qualified energy improvements like solar, battery, EV charger, or a heat pump. You can roll in up to 30% for non-energy improvements alongside an energy project, so a roof replacement done with solar is a good fit.
Can I combine Go Green with other rebates? Yes. You can stack Go Green financing with utility rebates, SGIP battery rebates, and any other incentives you qualify for. Solar Tech and Axia by QCells partner programs can help you find every rebate available for your project.
What if I want to pay the loan off early? Most Go Green lenders allow early payoff with no prepayment penalty. Check the specific terms with the lender you choose.
Why work with Home Pro for a Go Green project? We coordinate your roof, solar, battery, and EV charger as one project. You get one point of contact, one permit, and one warranty across all the work. We connect you with a Go Green participating lender and handle the contractor side of the application.
