Wheelhouse Credit Union Solar Loan

Wheelhouse Credit Union is a not-for-profit credit union based in San Diego. They have been one of California's top solar lenders for years, and many Bay Area solar companies work with them because their loans are clean and direct.

If you qualify for membership, a Wheelhouse solar loan can be a strong fit for buying solar, battery storage, or other home energy upgrades. Their loans are secured by the equipment, not your home, and they offer long terms with no dealer fees added to the loan amount.

Home Pro Roofing and Solar in Sunnyvale, CA provides roofing and solar services for Bay Area homeowners. We handle roof replacements, solar installations, and battery backup systems. We specialize in solar removal and reinstallation during reroofing. Financing available. Nearly 20 years of experience. We coordinate everything so you never manage multiple contractors. How the Wheelhouse Solar Loan Works

This is a standard installment loan with fixed monthly payments. You get the loan, pay the contractor, and pay Wheelhouse back over time. There are no balloon payments and no tax credit assumptions built into the payment structure.

Loan amounts: $5,000 to $80,000

Terms: 5, 10, 12, 15, or 20 years

Rates: Starting around 4.74% APR for qualified borrowers. Your rate depends on credit, term, and loan amount.

First payment: Up to 90 days deferred so your system can start producing savings before payments begin.

Discount: 0.25% off the rate if you open a Wheelhouse Inspired Checking account with direct deposit and autopay.

Filing: A UCC-1 is filed on the solar equipment. There is no lien on your home.

What Makes Wheelhouse Different

Most solar loans you see at the kitchen table come from national lenders like GoodLeap or Mosaic. Those loans look cheap on paper, but the installer pays a large dealer fee that gets rolled into your loan amount. A 25% dealer fee on a $30,000 system means you actually finance $37,500.

Wheelhouse loans do not have hidden dealer fees added to the loan principal. You finance the real cost of the system. That usually makes the total cost of borrowing lower over the life of the loan, even when the rate looks a bit higher than a dealer-fee loan.

Other things to know:

  • No prepayment penalty
  • Re-amortization allowed after a principal reduction
  • Interest may be tax-deductible since the loan is secured (talk to your tax person)

Membership Requirements

This is the part Bay Area homeowners need to understand. Wheelhouse is a community credit union with roots in San Diego, and membership is restricted.

You qualify for Wheelhouse membership if any of the following apply:

  • You live or work in San Diego County
  • You are a family member of a current Wheelhouse member
  • You join the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, San Diego Automotive Museum, or the Arbor Day Foundation
  • You belong to a participating select employee group

The Arbor Day Foundation membership is the most common path for homeowners outside San Diego County. Membership is a small annual donation and opens the door to Wheelhouse membership.

When Wheelhouse Makes Sense

A Wheelhouse loan fits best when:

  • You want true ownership of your solar system
  • You can qualify on credit and income
  • You prefer a clean, fee-free loan structure
  • You are okay with a small one-time step to join through the Arbor Day Foundation

If you do not want to deal with the membership step, we also work with other lenders like GoodLeap, Go Green Home, and the lenders behind our prepaid PPA programs. We can compare options side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Bay Area homeowners use a Wheelhouse loan? Yes. You do not have to live in San Diego County to use a Wheelhouse solar loan. You just need to qualify for membership through one of their community partners like the Arbor Day Foundation, which is open to anyone.

Does Wheelhouse put a lien on my house? No. The loan is secured by the solar equipment through a UCC-1 filing. Your home title is not affected.

Are there dealer fees built into a Wheelhouse loan? No. This is one of the reasons we recommend Wheelhouse over many national solar lenders. The loan finances the real system cost without a hidden fee rolled into the principal.

What credit score do I need? Wheelhouse looks at the full application, not just credit score. Many homeowners qualify with scores in the high 600s or above. They consider income, debt, and employment in the decision.

Can I pay off the loan early? Yes. There is no prepayment penalty. You can also ask Wheelhouse to re-amortize the loan after a large principal payment, which lowers your monthly payment going forward.

Does the interest count as tax-deductible? Because the loan is secured by the solar equipment, the interest may be deductible. Tax rules vary by household, so talk to your tax preparer.

How long does approval take? Most decisions come back within a few business days. Funding happens after the project is approved by the credit union, sometimes in stages as work is completed.

What happens if I sell the home? You pay off the remaining loan balance at closing. Because there is no lien on the home, removing the UCC-1 from the equipment is straightforward.

Why work with Home Pro? We handle your roof, solar, battery, and EV charger as one coordinated project. We can connect you to Wheelhouse or another lender that fits your situation, and we manage the contractor side of the financing paperwork.
